Pride Is _____
An Exploration and Celebration of Pride: Past, Present, and Future

In honor of Pride month, The Humanities Truck came out to downtown D.C. for the Pride festival on Sunday, June 12th.

The Truck, parked just two blocks down from the festival, on the corner of 6th and E St., created a live, community photo collage at the event by collecting, printing, and displaying photographs contributed by event visitors. With a theme of “Pride Is___,”  each photograph tells a story about Pride past, Pride today, and pride we can hope toward.  It is our hope that additional oral history interviews will be collected virtual post-event and updated here.

How The Exhibit Was Created:

Taking inspiration from our successful model at Celebrate Petworth 2021, “Pride Is__” utilized a multi-method approach to garner community participation.

First, with the help of Local photographer Nancy Shia, we gathered images that told the stories of pride of the past. We also reached out in advanced to friends of the truck for contributions to the pride of the present and pride of the future sections. These images were on display for passers-by and for participants to use as inspiration for their contribution to the collage.

At the Pride festival, the community was asked to contribute their own photos, either through text or live portrait taking by Director Dan Kerr, that were printed in live-time by graduate fellows.

Participants received their photos and were asked to place them on the truck collage, and write their own captions.

The Exhibit:

Below you will find the exhibit: Each section explores and celebrates the history (and future) of Pride in D.C.

Hover over each picture to see its caption as it appeared on the truck!

Pride of the Past

First, you’ll see a participant submitted photo. Then a collection from local photographer, Nancy Shia

This collection  highlights prides past, starting in 1981 with photos through the 2000s.

They tell a story of the history of pride in DC.

Pride of the Present

This collection of photos include submissions from recent prides across the country, as well as day of submissions.

For “Pride of the Present”, we asked participants to reflect on what pride is today and how we might show that pride.

Pride of the Future

This collection of photos include submissions from recent prides across the country, as well as day of submissions.

For “Pride of the Future”, we asked participants to reflect on what they hope pride will be in the future.
